Today is Tuesday

1st Block - Bell Ringer English 9 H Jan. 26, 2010

Copy definition:
A literary allusion is an indirect reference to another famous person, place, thing, or literary work.
1. O'Henry uses the Magi in his story. Why does he compare Della and Jim to the Magi?
2. What other allusion is used in the story? Why does the author use it?
3.  In modern times, it is hard to imagine selling one's hair to have money to buy a loved one a gift. What sacrifices can you think of that are more relevant in today's society?
 
Daily Work:
Vocabulary word/pictures - fold a piece of paper 4 times.  Write one vocabulary for each section from the list for Gift of the Magi.  Draw a picture to represent each word.
Watch clip about Richard Wright.  Read short story, "The Rights to the Streets of Memphis."  Do vocabulary practice from Lit Book - p. 118
 
Speech - 2nd block Bellringer Jan. 26, 2010

p. 139 Recalling the facts
1. What is the best way to begin an interview?
2. What question should you use to end an interview?

Daily Work - Watch clip - 10 Questions on CSTV;  Divide into groups - Each group write 5 open-ended questions.  Groups interview each other.  "Celebrity" interviews role play.  Take notes on job/scholarship interviews.  Watch good/bad job interview clips.

Speech 3rd block - BellringerAdvanced Speech Jan. 25, 2010

p. 142-143
1. What is a puff ball?
2. If you are being interviewed, what should you do in case of long pause?
3. What is a bridge?
4. What is a sparkler?
5. What should you always do after an interview?


Daily Work - Job interview skills and clips; Continue with group work - dealing with difficult people.  Role Play group discussion; Begin Impromptu "brown bag" speeches.
