English 9 Honors May 12, 2010

A. Finding Verbal Phrases:  For each sentence write the verbal phrase and identify as gerund, participle, or infinitive. See # 1 for example.
1. Painting still-life pictures taught Mike a lot about color. (Painting still-life pictures - gerund)
2. Studying art also taught him about history.
3. We don’t care to go out for breakfast.
4. Who wants to run to the store for some milk and bread?
5. His main goal is improving his brushwork.
6. The old flag, battered by wind and weather, was finally replaced.
7. Finished, the artists cleaned their brushes.
8. Exhausted, Victor fell to the ground after his long run.

B.  Change the words in bold to gerunds. See # 1 for example.
1. After he took lessons, Juan showed great improvement.
